- W1963686571 abstract "The purpose of this study was to increase the health, physical activity, fitness, and functional mobility of women with mobility impairment. The final sample for analysis included 68 women with physical disability and mobility impairment from the Kansas City area (mean age and body mass index = 44 yr and 32 kg/m2). Diagnoses included various neuromusculoskeletal conditions that impaired mobility. All independently walked with/without an assistive device or used a manual wheelchair. We randomly assigned participants to either an experimental (E) group (n = 32) or non-treatment waiting-list control (C) group (n = 36). The E group was assessed before and after a 6-mo “minimal” intervention consisting of an educational workshop, intensive physical activity counseling and planning, and independent community/home-based physical activity/exercise programming with behavioral supports. Analysis of covariance with α = .05 revealed: no significant changes (p ≥ .46) in body mass index, skinfold thickness, resting heart rate or systolic blood pressure, joint ranges of motion, blood lipids, total physical activity, and SF-36 physical and mental component scores, strong trends toward increased leisure physical activity (p = .06, ↑34%), SF-36 bodily pain subscore in C group (p = .16, ↑18%), and maximal 63-m walking/wheeling speed in the E group (p = .20, ↑12%), and significantly decreased resting diastolic blood pressure (p = .03, ↓3%) and increased peak heart rate during 63-m walk/wheel (p = .01, ↑3%) in E group. In a very heterogeneous group of women with mobility impairment, a minimal 6-mo educational, behavioral and independent physical activity intervention appeared to increase leisure physical activity, moderate pain increases, increase ability to exert during exercise, decrease diastolic blood pressure, and increase speed of mobility. Supported by CDC Grant # R04-CCR717707–01." @default.
