- W1963748680 abstract "The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that mfantsbe 100% breastfed for the first 4 to 6 months. The Healthy People Year 2000 objectives for breastfeeding duration recommends that at least 50% of infants be breastfed for 6 months. Data from the California Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) shows that only 18% of moms fully breastfed their infants for longer than 2 months. Furthermore, in-hospital breastfeeding initiation rates for 1993-1994 show that Los Angeles County is one of the counties with the lowest breastfeeding incidence. A local WIC Program, tested the hypothesis, that if providing incentives to participants and staff can increase the rate of duration of breastfeeding. The hypothesis was tested at one WIC site, where clients were enrolled from Aug. 1997-March 1998. Quarterly, these moms who were 100% breastfeeding for at least 2 months received recognition and prizes. A free lunch was provided as incentive to the counselor who enrolled the most 100% breastfeeding moms during the allotted period. A total of 92 Hispanic women, ranging in age from 17-44 years with a mean age of 27 years, were encouraged to initiate 100% breastfeeding by WIC counselors during their infants enrollment. Monthly telephone follow-up and special hands-on problem solving were provided for one year. The results showed that 26 (28.3%) women were 100% breastfeeding their babies for one year, 15 (16.3%) for 6-11 months, 15 (16.3%) for 4-5 months, 20 (21.7%) for 2-3 months, and 16 (17.4%) for only one month. Two out of 5 adolescents in the program completed 5 months of 100% breastfeeding their babies. These results are in line with the recommendations of both AAP and PRAMS and prove that their goals are attainable. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that continued efforts to support and encourage 100% breastfeeding using varied promotions are essential in maintaining breastfeeding successful. It is recommended that an incentive program be promoted among adolescent mothers to encourage 100% breastfeeding for future study." @default.
