- W1963770975 abstract "A quiet design feature of many fan stages is a proportionment of the rotor and stator blade numbers so that blade passage tones caused by rotor-stator flow interactions will not propagate, i.e., are “cutoff.” The anticipated reduction in tone level has been observed in some flight test data but is generally masked in static test data. This masking is attributed to inlet flow distortions, prevalent daring static testing, which generate tones by interacting with the rotor. In this study, an evaluation of distortion tone properties is used to analyze the farfield static test data for eight full-scale jet engine fans tested at a NASA Lewis outdoor facility. The analysis involves a compensation for distortion tones of the noise propagating from the aft fan duct. The analyzed data clearly differentiate the fans which are and are not “cutoff.” The result confirms that “cutoff” is a quiet design feature which can reduce the noise of operational aircraft." @default.
