- W1963827390 abstract "Objective: In several previous epidemiological studies and clinical trials, single oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) has been used to establish the diagnosis of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or diabetes. The aim of this sub-study of Chinese High Normal Blood Pressure (CHINOM) Study was to investigate the reproducibility of OGTT in the diagnosis of IGT and diabetes. Methods: In the screening period of CHINOM, 56 adult subjects (male: 36 cases) with high normal blood pressure and impaired glucose tests diagnosed by OGTT received a repeated OGTT 1-2 weeks after the initial test. Fasting glucose tests were also performed in these subjects on both occasions. Venous blood glucose was measured in the local laboratory according to the requirement of coordinating center of CHINOM. Results: In all the 56 subjects, the initial tests of fasting glucose and 2hr OGTT were 6.72 ± 2.56 mmol/L and 10.58 ± 4.32, respectively. After 1–2 weeks, the fasting glucose was reduced to 6.58 ± 1.40 mmol/L (P = 0.5347) while the 2hr glucose of OGTT was 8.72 ± 3.64 mmol/L which was significantly lower than the previous test (P = 0.0012). Among these subjects, the 2hr glucose of the second OGTT was lowered in 44 (78.57%) while there were 33 (58.93%) cases whose fasting glucose was lower than the earlier test. In those with IGT diagnosed by the first OGTT (46 cases), the 2hr glucose of repeated OGTT was also lower (7.94 ± 3.40 mmol/L vs. 8.93 ± 0.85 mmol/L, P = 0.043). Conclusions: The sub-study of CHINOM suggest that single OGTT is not adequate to establish the diagnosis of impairment of glucose metabolism which can overestimate the prevalence of diabetes and IGT in those without experiencing such examination thus may endanger such subjects and even society to an inappropriate situation." @default.
