- W1963979785 abstract "Abstract The importance of several factors in induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) was examined in vitro in thin, transverse sections of the guinea pig hippocampus. Long-lasting augmentation of the field potentials evoked in region CA3 by fimbrial stimulation was taken as the indicator of LTP. LTP was most clearly demonstrated with test shocks of relatively low intensity. There was wide variation in the magnitude of LTP among slices. According to criteria set up in these experiments, slices of low responsiveness could be selected and discarded before tetanus. Large LTP was induced when the intensity and frequency of the tetanic stimulation were high and the media contained Ca2+ at high concentrations. When a tetanizing current was delivered either to the fimbria or to mossy fibers, LTP occurred only in the tetanized pathway. We conclude that the decisive factors in inducing LTP were intensity and frequency of tetanus, Ca2+ concentration, and responsiveness of slices. The importance of the intensity of the tetanic stimulation suggests that LTP is induced as a result of coactivation of some critical number of presynaptic fibers." @default.
