- W1964019543 abstract "Epidemiological studies have indicated that Alzheimer's patients have specific nutritional deficiencies when compared to age-matched controls [1] and recently studies in experimental models and DB-RC clinical intervention studies with the Medical Food Souvenaid (MFS) have indicated that restoring these deficiencies might lead to improved memory performance [2, 3]. After initial findings that patients with Type II diabetes in the Rotterdam Study show an increased risk of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) [4], others have reported that diabetes can increase the risk of AD by 45-90% [5-7]. Diabetes seems to be an independent risk factor for MCI and AD and it is associated with more rapid cognitive decline. With the elevated risk of accelerated disease progression as a consequence of hyperglycemia, it is important to minimize the risk of episodes of high glucose levels. Therefore, we evaluated the glycemic response after intake of the MFS. Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic load (GL) were determined by standardized methodology [8] in 12 healthy subjects as recommended by WHO/FAO and ISO26642. Each subject received 50 grams of carbohydrates from the MFS (Souvenaid, Nutricia N.V., Zoetermeer, The Netherlands) and a standard reference glucose drink (3 times). The GI value of the MFS is 49.8 ± 3.5 and classified as low GI (<55). The GL of one daily dose is 8.3 and also classified as low (<10)." @default.
