- W1964126675 abstract "Asthma, allergic rhinitis, and other chronic respiratory diseases are the most common non-communicable diseases in children, and their prevalence and burden have increased in recent decades.1Bousquet J Khaltaev N Global surveillance, prevention and control of chronic respiratory diseases: a comprehensive approach.http://www.who.int/gard/publications/GARD%20Book%202007.pdfGoogle Scholar This is why the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) has made their prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment a priority for the EU's public health policy. On Sept 20–21, 2011, the Polish Presidency held an expert's conference2Samolinski B Fronczak A Kuna P et al.Experts Conference during Polish Presidency of the EU Council. These conclusions3Council of the European UnionCouncil conclusions on prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases in children.http://www.consilium.europa.eu/uedocs/cms_Data/docs/pressdata/en/lsa/126522.pdfGoogle Scholar were adopted during an interministerial conference of the 27 Member States, on Dec 2, 2011, and are outlined here. A large group of experts including representatives of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the European Respiratory Society, the International Primary Care Respiratory Group, the Polish Allergy Society, the WHO Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases, and the European Federation of Allergy and Airway Diseases Patients' Associations were invited by the Polish Minister of Health to convene and discuss how to prevent and control chronic respiratory diseases in children. On the basis of these discussions, the EU Council invites member states to: (1)(1) Tackle the problems that constitute the biggest risk factors that could trigger a chronic respiratory disease: tobacco smoke, poor indoor air quality, and outdoor air pollution. Prevention should begin before childbirth, and stop-smoking programmes for pregnant women should be intensified. Additionally, future mothers and children should be protected against exposure to tobacco smoke, in particular at home and in closed spaces.(2)Strengthen efforts to reduce the disability and premature death related to asthma by fostering best practices at an international level.(3)Strengthen knowledge and public awareness in the prevention and treatment of these diseases. Health education of children, parents, and teachers is recognised as important in this regard, as well as training of health professionals.(4)Foster cooperation and exchange of best practices and support member states in implementing their policies and improving networking, particularly international research networks,4Bousquet J Burney PG Zuberbier T et al.GA2LEN (Global Allergy and Asthma European Network) addresses the allergy and asthma ‘epidemic’.Allergy. 2009; 64: 969-977Crossref PubMed Scopus (94) Google Scholar to find cost-effective procedures to improve the standards of health-care systems for chronic respiratory diseases.(5)Develop research for a better understanding of the reasons for the increase in prevalence of chronic respiratory diseases in children and the disparities between regions and throughout Europe.5Decramer M The European respiratory roadmap.Lancet. 2011; 378: 1765-1767Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (6) Google Scholar These measures will improve the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases, have a positive effect on child development and quality of life, and contribute to an active and healthy childhood and healthy ageing. This priority is, therefore, one of the cornerstones of the public health policy of the EU. We declare that we have no conflicts of interest." @default.
