- W1964156763 abstract "The behavior and flank patch pigmentation of jewel fish, Hemichromis bimaculatus , were recorded during dummy presentations. Adult males exhibited a capacity for rapid changes in intensity of such pigmentation. The intensity of pigmentation was categorized into one of three conditions: black, gray, and light. Assumption of the light patch condition was associated with a courtship response to the dummy and assumption of the black patch condition with an aggressive response. It is suggested that the condition of the flank patch could be used as a general indicator of a fish's internal state and thus might function in intraspecific communication." @default.
