- W1964528993 abstract "Abstract Digestive enzyme activity in Engraulis capensis Gilchrist is rapidly induced by feeding activity. Of the four enzymes studied, significant proportions of the laminarinase and chitinase activities could have been contributed by the ingested food. The elimination of faeces is exponential and depends on food type, varying from −0.025 · h−1 for Chaetoceros spp. to −0.272 · h−1 for Artemia sp. Zooplankton are absorbed more efficiently than phytoplankton (Cz = 77.88 ± 7.22%, CP = 50.57 ± 0.69%, Nz = 87.38 ± 4.28%, Np = 83.21 ± 1.80%), indicating that the former are a superior food source. The rate of excretion of nitrogen from a meal, which only lags ingestion by 2–4 h, is dependent on ration size, feeding rate and time and the activity status of the fish. A constant portion of the ingested and absorbed nitrogen are excreted (41.5 and 47.8%, respectively) and it is estimated that 100-mm anchovy require a maintenance ration of 2.17 mg N·g−1 dry wt·day−1." @default.
