- W1964547952 abstract "Abstract The use of retractable magnets is investigated for achievement of large field strength adjustability in the permanent-magnet hybrid undulator. Magnet retraction is applicable to the curved-pole electron-beam focusing technique since it provides for fixed pole position as the field strength varies. Thus equal two-plane e-beam focusing properties are maintained at all field values. These characteristics have been verified experimentally on a 12-pole hybrid mockup with a gap to wavelength ratio of 0.375 and peak on-axis field of 6.0 kG. The wedged-pole configuration is used to provide high field strength and for avoidance of magnet binding and chipping as the magnets are retracted. At peak field strengths comparable to that obtained by the highest-field electromagnetic undulators, analysis indicates that the retractable-magnet hybrid should be fully adjustable from 0 to 100% field strength without encountering pole saturation." @default.
