- W1964667718 abstract "The trigeminal nerve shows an extensive distribution in the human head and neck by its three peripheral branches: the ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular nerves. The somatosensory component of the trigeminal nerve projects into the trigeminal sensory nucleus, a complex structure extending from the mesencephalon to the spinal cord. In addition, the trigeminal branches are accompanied by sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers along their course.Interestingly, the stimulation of nociceptors, mechanoreceptors, proprioceptors, and thermoceptors from the oral facial region can trigger cardiovascular responses, such as arterial hypotension and bradycardia (together called the trigeminocardiac reflex), involving the vagal nerve. Moreover, recent experimental and clinical data indicate that stimulation by mandibular extension causes a reduction in arterial blood pressure and bradycardia whereas cerebral blood flow increases. Therefore, the stimulation of peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve induces autonomic nervous system responses causing physiological homeostatic mechanisms that, in turn, affect the heart rate, peripheral vascular resistance, and cerebral vascular tone. These homeostatic responses might be useful under pathophysiological conditions." @default.
