- W1965413612 abstract "Abstract The dislocation density-depth profile derived from X-ray line broadening was determined on a number of steels (AISI 1010, 1040, 1080 and 4130), aluminum alloys (2024 and 7050) and Naval brass after they had been cycled to various fractions of their fatigue life. The dislocation density ϱs in the surface layer was always larger than the dislocation density ϱi in the interior except at fracture when ϱ s = ϱ i = ϱ ∗ where ϱ ∗ is the dislocation density at fracture. The dislocation density ϱFF measured on the fracture faces was also equal to ϱ ∗ . In bending fatigue the dislocation density ϱi does not decrease as the applied tensile stresses decrease with distance from the surface. Rather, except near the neutral axis, ϱi is constant throughout the entire cross section of the fatigued specimen. It appears that a crack will form and propagate during fatigue when the stresses associated with the dislocations and the applied stress are equal to the fracture stress, provided that ϱi is not too low." @default.
