- W1965427838 abstract "Abstract Fluoride uptake and retention by teeth were studied in young and old groups of dogs, which had been given drinking water containing 150 ppm fluoride. A correlation was found between fluoride uptake and degree of mineralization of the dental structures. In young dogs significant amounts of fluoride were taken up by enamel and crown and root dentine. All these structures seemed incompletely mineralized compared with the corresponding tissues of old dogs, in which there was no significant increase of fluoride. In teeth of young dogs, the fluoride was not retained by enamel, in contrast to dentine after fluoride administration was discontinued. It is postulated that in enamel a superficial uptake occurs by ionic exchange, whereas in dentine some fluoride is incorporated more firmly by the formation of new tissue. This would account for its greater retention by dentine. These findings are discussed and related to the situation in man." @default.
