Last, who served with the Canadian peacekeeping forces in Bosnia and in Cyprus, views peace‐building initiatives as the only alternative to the more or Less permanent establishment of an international policing operation in Bosnia. Beginning with an examination of the sources of fear and hatred underlying the violence in Bosnia, Last argues that the present conflict arises out of the experiences of the Last three generations and that no one side or group should be held entirely accountable. Focusing on the accounts of the Serb inhabitants of the city of Prijedor, he details their explanations for the violence that erupted in 1992 and continues to threaten today. Last offers a series of peace‐building initiatives designed to allay the fears of the Serb community while encouraging interchange between sympathetic panics in all three communities.
