- W1965570950 abstract "Current questionnaires may misclassify activity patterns in pregnant women as the majority have been developed and validated in men, emphasize participation in moderate to vigorous sports, and fail to include household or childcare activity. The Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ) is the first self-administered semi-quantitative questionnaire designed to measure physical activity during pregnancy. The PPAQ consists of 35 activities covering the areas of household and child care activity occupational activity, recreational activity, and sports and exercise. These activities accounted for more than 96% of the variance in energy expenditure in the sample. PURPOSE To assess the validity and reproducibility of the PPAQ in pregnant women. METHODS 35 women (mean age =31.0+7.2 years) (trimester 1=10, trimester 2=12, trimester 3=13) completed the PPAQ and then wore the MTI actigraph for seven consecutive days. At the end of the 7-day period, the PPAQ was repeated. The MTI actigraph was used to obtain an objective estimate of time spent in activity (> 250 counts/min). RESULTS The intraclass correlation coefficients used to measure reproducibility were 0.89 for total activity, 0.91 for light-intensity activity, and 0.88 for combined moderate and vigorous-intensity activity. In terms of validity, spearman correlations between the PPAQ and accelerometer intensity-specific measures were −0.39 (p < 0.05) for sedentary, 0.38 (p < 0.05) for light, and 0.33 for combined moderate and vigorous intensity activity. CONCLUSION Our data indicate that the PPAQ is a reliable instrument and provides a reasonably accurate measure of pregnancy physical activity. The PPAQ will serve as a valuable measure for studies assessing the relationship between physical activity during pregnancy and maternal and fetal disorders. Supported by NIH 1R03HD39341" @default.
