- W1965589429 abstract "The danger of excessive training in elite swimmers is very high. To reduce the potential of overtraining (OT), a group of elite male swimmers (n=7) were evaluated with performance and laboratory tests and subjective interviews over nine months. The testing was performed in Oct (T1), Nov (T2), Jan (T3), Apr(T4), May (T5), and July (T6). Fasted venous blood samples were taken from the antecubital vein. Each sample was analyzed for biological markers including CPK, AST, LDH, cortisol, urea, creatinine and WBC. Each athlete was asked for their subjective description of training stress, injury and illness in conjunction with the blood draws. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (p<.05). Prior to competition, (T5 and T6) LDH levels were significantly lower than T4 and T1 (T1=177.6; T2=171.6; T3=187.6; T4=171.4; T5=156.1; T6=140.9 U/L). Similarly, CPK was significantly less at T2, T3 and T4 than T6 and also less at T1 than T2 (T1=287.6; T2=452.3; T3=414.9; T4=395.4; T5=312.4; T6=230.6 U/L). No other OT marker was significantly different across time. Subjective descriptions of OT indicated high levels in Jan. (6:7 athletes), April and May (5:7 athletes) with zero reporting OT descriptions at the other time points. Elite male swimmers may experience overtraining symptoms subjectively without measurable changes in biological markers. However, a time lag between elevation in markers and subjective response was noted in these athletes." @default.
