- W1965708213 abstract "Of the roughly 604 species and subspecies of indigenous plants of the Galápagos Islands, 144 may be termed rare, and these are listed with notes on their intra-archipelago distribution, the present state of their populations, and developments that have occurred in recent years. Threats to their existence are identified, and evaluation made of their status on each of the major islands. It is shown that the endemic plants are more vulnerable to the impact of man—31% are rare, and 38% of these have stable populations, whereas 20% of the native plants are rare, and of these 55% grow in stable stands. The main threats are land exploitation (threatening 54% of the rare plants), introduced animals (40%), and introduced plants (19%). There are considerable differences between the islands: on those which are inhabited land-use activities and introduced plants cause the worst problems; on some of the uninhabited islands population explosions of goats and pigs have brough the situation close to ecological disaster. The recent catastrophic fire on Sierra Negra has seriously affected at least 18 rare species. Recommendations are made to increase the priority of rare plant species preservation in management plans. @default.
