- W1965724395 abstract "Named after the venomous snake, Copperheads resided throughout the North during the Civil War but were most active in the Old Northwest. Primarily Northerners with Southern roots, German and Irish Catholics, or strict constructionists of the Constitution, Copperheads, despite being known as Peace Democrats, were not pacifists. Jennifer L. Weber's examination of the Copperheads, a movement neglected by the past generation of historians, nonetheless enters a longstanding historiographical debate: were Copperheads victims of Republican campaign rhetoric that damned them as being treasonous, or did Copperheads indeed subvert the Union war effort? While Weber asserts that “most Copperheads were not traitors,” she sides with the latter position (p. 6). Copperheads embraced the motto “The Union as it was, the Constitution as it is” and for most of the war believed that “an appeased South would hasten back to the arms of its former country” (p. 99). Weber notes that Copperheadism developed during three phases. In 1861, some Northerners proclaimed secession to be constitutional and protested Abraham Lincoln's early stewardship of the war. Opposition to emancipation, conscription, and the suspension of habeas corpus expanded the Copperhead ranks in 1862. A third phase, which overlapped the second, flowered in the summer of 1864 when the mounting casualties of the Federal army made victory illusive. In the end, the Confederate surrender of Atlanta in September 1864 and Lincoln's reelection two months later crippled the Copperheads." @default.
