- W1965775145 abstract "To the Editor. Bode et al1 describe a cross-sectional, epidemiologic survey of 863 children aged 5 to 8 in southern Germany. Their objective was to determine the impact of Helicobacter pylori infection on gastrointestinal symptoms in a general population of “preschool” children.Although interesting, we have several concerns and the conclusion may be misleading. The authors note the study population to be “preschool,” but the reported ages are 5 to 8. In the United States, this population would be “school-aged,” typically kindergarten to third grade. This distinction may not be trivial, as we have previously noted that H pylori infection may actually decrease in prevalence in school-aged children.2–7 The authors claim that there are no abdominal symptoms of H pylori infection. This is incorrect. It is known that acute ingestion of H pylori bacteria causes symptoms.8 ,9 The concept of “active infection” deserves further scrutiny.
