- W1965851851 abstract "Simulation is widely utilized in nursing as an innovative teaching strategy for undergraduate nursing students to practice fundamental skills and to enhance the critical thinking process. Based upon feedback from our baccalaureate graduates and local employers, our graduates perform well in a practice setting but often are not confident interacting with other disciplines to prioritize care in an acute care setting. To address this need and feedback, a multidisciplinary team of instructors in the College of Nursing and Health Professions created a simulation that depicts a hospital setting in which four disciplines interact simultaneously with an individual patient. Uses of simulation at multiple levels of fidelity are initiated using a Keri Skills Manikin advancing to the utilization of a high fidelity patient simulator. The setting simulates the hospital environment in which the patient is in need of interventions that must be provided by each of the disciplines represented (nursing, occupational therapy, radiology, and respiratory therapy). Learning objectives focus on communication and prioritization. Each discipline provides didactic instruction using the same client information or case study. Students are expected to prioritize the needs of the patient by determining the sequence of the treatments anticipated for each discipline. Communication and prioritization among health care disciplines is an integral aspect of rendering the care to the patient in a safe, effective manner. Prior to the simulation, students have had clinical experience in the acute care hospital. This simulation provides students an opportunity to collaboratively care for a patient in a safe environment with clinical instructors present for guidance. Students are required to complete an evaluation to determine the effectiveness of this learning experience for communication and prioritization among a multidisciplinary team. Instructors complete an evaluation of the simulation to determine the effectiveness of the teaching strategies. After the students graduate, feedback will be elicited from graduates and employers to ascertain if the multidisciplinary approach enhances the students' ability to communicate and prioritize collaboratively." @default.
