- W1965868310 abstract "Physical activity (PA) has been associated with lower morbidity and mortality. Strength training is an integral component of the national health objectives for physical activity and fitness and is important in protecting against disability, maintaining functional independence, preserving bone density and enhancing quality of life. The goal of Healthy People 2010 Objective 22–4 is to increase the proportion of adults who perform muscular strengthening activities from the baseline of 19% (those who lift weights or do calisthenics as assessed by the National Health Interview Survey) to 30% by the year 2010. To enhance surveillance of physical activity, the Physical Activity and Health Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed a telephone-administered questionnaire to measure physical activity. The strength training question asked, ôIn a usual week, do you do any activities designed to increase muscle strength or tone, such as lifting weights pull-ups, push-ups, or sit-ups?ö. The question was asked of a national sample (n = 7529) of adults 18 years and older between November 1999 and May 2000 as part of the larger physical activity questionnaire. Data were obtained by national random-digit dialing of households with telephones in the 48 contiguous United States using a protocol adapted from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). To meet the recommendations study participants need to perform strengthening activities on 2 or more days per week. Results of the current study showed that 39% of men and 31% of women met these recommendations. Of those meeting the overall recommended level of PA (30 min ≥ 5x/week moderate-intensity or 20 min ≥ 3x/week vigorous-intensity), 57% of males and 45% of female also participated in strength training 2 or more times per week. While categorized as inactive, 16% of males and 8% of females met the recommended level for strengthening activities. Strength training is becoming recognized as an essential component of a physically active lifestyle. To assess this on a national level, it is important that the question(s) used in surveillance systems assess strengthening activities besides weight lifting." @default.
