- W1965894118 abstract "Observations in three patients, and a review of twelve similar cases already reported, provide the basis for concluding that a distinctive syndrome appears to be associated with some bronchial carcinoid tumors. Attention is focused on flushing attacks which are more prolonged and severe than in the usual carcinoid syndrome and the following manifestations which frequently occur in association: anxiety and tremulousness, temperature elevations, periorbital and facial edema, increased lacrimation and salivation, rhinorrhea, diaphoresis, explosive diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, hypotension and oliguria. The pathogenesis of these severe flushing reactions is discussed in terms of current knowledge of the complex endocrine capacities of carcinoid tumors. Evidence is presented that corticosteroid therapy may afford dramatic relief. As has been noted previously in patients with bronchial carcinoid, valvular heart lesions may be predominantly left-sided (two cases) and widespread metastases with osteogenic bone lesions frequently occur. Other endocrine abnormalities also occur more frequently in these patients than in those with ileal primary lesions. Thus, bronchial carcinoids produce some of the most interesting variants in what may still be broadly termed the “carcinoid syndrome.”" @default.
