- W1966026058 abstract "We have measured separately the mean moderation times $T_{ensuremath{pi}}^{}{}_{}{}^{mathrm{He}}({v}_{A})$ and $T_{K}^{}{}_{}{}^{mathrm{He}}({v}_{A})$, spent by ${ensuremath{pi}}^{ensuremath{-}}$ and ${K}^{ensuremath{-}}$, respectively, in atomic orbits before nuclear capture in the Northwestern helium bubble chamber. It was necessary to resolve the velocities of ${ensuremath{pi}}^{ensuremath{-}}$ (or ${K}^{ensuremath{-}}$)down to $vensuremath{approx}0.02c$. The resolution was obtained in the pion case by measuring the ${ensuremath{mu}}^{ensuremath{-}}$ range from ${ensuremath{pi}}^{ensuremath{-}}ensuremath{-}{ensuremath{mu}}^{ensuremath{-}}ensuremath{-}{e}^{ensuremath{-}}$ decays and in the kaon case by the kinematic analysis of the $ensuremath{tau}$-decay mode. We obtained the following results: $T_{ensuremath{pi}}^{}{}_{}{}^{mathrm{He}}(0.02c)=(3.19ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}0.23)ifmmodetimeselsetexttimesfi{}{10}^{ensuremath{-}10}sec,$ $T_{K}^{}{}_{}{}^{mathrm{He}}(0.02c)=(2.4ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}0.4)ifmmodetimeselsetexttimesfi{}{10}^{ensuremath{-}10}mathrm{sec}.$These measured times are two orders of magnitude longer than that predicted by Day assuming dominant Stark effect and thus $S$-state capture. A recent calculation by Russell reduces the rate of Stark effect yet predicts cascade times still five times shorter than our experimental values. Thus the angular-momentum states of ${K}^{ensuremath{-}}$ capture in liquid helium, whose determination was the motivation for the present experiments, are still unknown without a detailed understanding of the de-excitation mechanism of the $K$-mesonic atom." @default.
