- W1966037253 abstract "Reviewed by: Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education Bethany M. Craig Carol E. Kasworm, Amy D. Rose, and Jovita M. Ross-Gordon (Eds.). Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications. 2010. 493 pp. Cloth: $95.00. ISBN: 978-1-4129-6050-2. Carol E. Kasworm, Amy D. Rose, and Jovita M. Ross-Gordon join forces as editors to provide an updated handbook on the current practices and knowledge in the field of adult and continuing education. The handbook, sponsored by the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education and published every 10 years, features articles and information from a variety of experts in specific areas who give an updated understanding of the research, methods, and organizations that are currently important in the field of adult education. Each chapter is written by experts who also pay homage to others in the field by citing various studies that have been completed on a specific topic. A reference list for each chapter supplies citations for the studies. These citation lists are welcome tools for readers who are interested in learning more about the specific studies. Part 1 consists of five chapters that provide the reader with the central themes of the adult learner and adult learning. Those themes include defining adult learners, access and participation, adult learning, adult development, and group and organizational learning. This section provides a solid overview of adult learning and organizational learning that sets the stage for the rest of the handbook. Part 2, containing Chapters 6–10, describes theoretical frameworks, histories of adult education, international adult and continuing education, policy, and sociology of adult and continuing education. For anyone thinking of conducting a study related to adult and continuing education, Chapter 6 on theoretical frameworks is a “must read,” as it provides a solid foundation of many excellent theories that can be used for research on this topic. Part 3 (Chapters 11–16) discusses adult and continuing education in practice with information on the field’s professionalization, professional identity, facilitation and design of learning, the planning and delivering of programs, assessment and evaluation, and management and leadership. In today’s world, competition among colleges and universities that offer similar programs is part of the everyday landscape. This section of the handbook provides a concise list of points to consider, when offering adult education programs, to ensure high quality. The points stem from practices that are the gold standard in the field. Part 4, the longest section, features Chapters 17 through 30. Among the topics discussed are adult basic education, English as a second language, community colleges, employer-sponsored learning, military contributions, spirituality, health and wellness, and distance education. This section of the handbook, although seemingly a catch-all, features important items to consider when serving adult students. It directs attention to adult students’ various background characteristics and experiences that faculty and staff must acknowledge and address when providing effective services and programs. Continuing the theme of student diversity, Part 5, in Chapters 31–36, reviews issues of social justice, struggles about gender and sexuality, the “American dream,” adult students with disabilities, and the influence of socioeconomic class and geographic place in the field of adult and continuing education. All of these influences are important in [End Page 125] understanding the unique motivations and goals of adult students. Part 6 directs the reader’s attention outside of the United States. Chapters 37–40 emphasize globalization, the knowledge society, informal learning in the virtual era, and techniques for creating and re-creating community. These are but a few of the many the challenges and opportunities that lie within globalization. The editors conclude the handbook by summarizing key themes and offering their concluding thoughts. Undoubtedly, the work of adult educators is important for the current world but even more vital for the future of our world. Ultimately, this handbook is the godfather of the current trends and information on adult education. A must-have for those who work in the field of adult education, it provides substantial knowledge about all aspects of the field itself. The handbook is also recommended to those who may be just learning about adult education and wish to learn more about certain..." @default.
