- W1966097534 abstract "Marshal Hubert Lyautey (1854–1934) features prominently in the academic pantheon of French military figures in the colonies. He is often remembered as the Gallic equivalent to Frederick Lugard: a partisan of a form of ‘indirect rule’ relying on ensuring local cooperation (through astute political negotiation backed up by, instead of coming in support of, military activity), he famously advocated the policy of the so-called tâche d’huile (the oil stain), positing that a strategy of ‘creeping occupation’, in lieu of the traditional military columns, would expand French rule more effectively. Lyautey’s role in Morocco from 1912 onwards has been closely scrutinised, as much as his life as a Royalist servant of the Republic, thanks to a variety of works ranging from André Maurois’ biography of 1931 to Daniel Rivet’s monumental Lyautey et l’institution du protectorat français au Maroc of 1996. Yet, in spite of this abundant historiography, Michael Finch’s book bridges a major gap in our understanding of the making of a ‘colonial school’ of warfare in the French army: not only does Lyautey tend to be limited traditionally to his role in Morocco (with the notable exception of Pascal Venier’s Lyautey avant Lyautey), but the genesis of the ideas he implemented in this protectorate is also lost in the process. Finch’s essential objective is to address the second of these issues, and he does it cogently by bringing into the picture the often-overlooked figure of Marshal Gallieni (1849–1916), mostly remembered for his post-retirement feat of the Taxis de la Marne episode during the Great War, which regrettably overshadowed his influential views on strategies of colonial conquest." @default.
