- W1966149418 abstract "Abstract We present a detailed experimental investigation of the atomic chemisorption of Cl, Br and I on Ag(001) and on Ag(011). Our main method is angle-resolved photoemission, supplemented by LEED and XPS. We have studied coverage-dependent normal emission, angle-dependent spectra from ordered overlayers, light polarization effects and photon-energy-dependent cross-section variations. For the c(2 × 2)-overlayers of Cl on Ag(001) we could determine several two-dimensional adsorbate-derived bands, their orbital orientations and their angular momentum character. Our data are discussed in detail in the context of other experimental and theoretical information. We conclude that the halogen p-bands, which are always observed above the Ag d-bands, are due to a rather ionic interaction of atomic origin. In contrast, the more covalent bonds on Cu lead to p-bands below the substrate d-bands. In both cases, strong lateral interactions within the halogen-derived bands are identified." @default.
