- W1966185324 abstract "Abstract In an attempt to expedite diagnosis in jaundiced patients where a surgical cause has not been excluded, and in particular to reduce the period of delay in diagnosis where carcinoma of the head of the pancreas might be present, a triple test combining exocrine pancreatic function studies, cytology of the duodenal aspirate, and hypotonic duodenography has been applied. The tests took two hours and required only one intubation of the duodenum, using equipment which is available in most hospitals. In a series of 75 patients laparotomy was indicated by the tests in 40 and, in fact, would have been justified in 39; in the 40th patient, intrahepatic secondaries were present. In the remaining 35 patients, laparotomy was not indicated by the findings of the tests. But 13 of these patients had gallstones in the common bileduct and 5 had high bileduct carcinoma although the tests had revealed no abnormality. The tests can only detect abnormalities in the pancreas, in the duodenum, or at the ampulla, and this limits their usefulness. All but one of the carcinomas of the pancreas and all ampullary tumours were diagnosed by the tests." @default.
