- W1966204054 abstract "Large lesions were placed in the caudal preoptic region of cats and the resulting degeneration studied by the Nauta technic. The degenerated fibers passed medially in the upper mesencephalon and terminated on midline structures in the caudal mesencephalon and rostral pons. In another series of cats enormous lesions were placed in the medial mesencephalon and upper pons, which totally destroyed the region of termination of the degeneration as seen in the first group of animals. In these animals the autonomic functions, usually considered to be integrated in higher brain stem, were intact, but the temperament of the cats was drastically altered. These results and other reports in the literature indicate that there are two distinct descending pathways from the hypothalamus. These pathways differ in localization and in function. One is the classical pathway for autonomic functions that passes caudad in the dorsolateral reticular formation. The other, which has been demonstrated only by degeneration techniques, extends caudally and medially to terminate on midline structures in the caudal mesencephalon and rostral pons. After large lesions that destroy this area, the usual autonomic functions remain intact, but there are marked changes in temperament of the cats." @default.
