The scheme is based upon a size fractionation of the metal species, with subsequent application of a range of techniques to further define the species in each size fraction. These include ASV analysis at the natural pH of the sample, the use of Chelex ion-exchange resin and of u.v. irradiation to destroy organic matter. The limitations of the various components of the scheme are highlighted. In particular, it is found that the u.v. irradiation technique is not generally suitable for quantitative interpretation in the speciation of freshwaters. The successful application of the scheme to two river water samples, Pendle Water and River Irwell (N.W. England) is described, and the results compared with a physico-chemical model of freshwaters.
