- W1966316392 abstract "The purpose of this paper is to present a Lockhccd MartinMASA effort that began in August 1993 to test thc feasibility of utilizing the Orbiter's active thcriiial control system (ATCS) space radiators for convective heat rejection instead of the baseline liquid cooling ground support equipment (GSE) as an alternatc ground cooling methodology to reduce a major Space Shuttlc operations cost driver and increase systems reliability. The Alternate Ground Cooling (AGC) Test Project was pcrformed over a wide range of vehicle ground processing operations and vehicle power configurations with all lour orbiters. Vehicle telemetry, special drag-on recording instrumentation and infrared imaging data were recorded and analyzed to determine orbiter payload bay cnvironmen1 and ability to maintain orbiter ATCS within opcrational cooling limits. It was determined that AGC can support all Space Shuttle operations for primary cooling except terminal Launch Countdown, unique low temperature subsystems tests and certain thermal sensitive payloads. AGC can support as an emergency hackup to liquid ground cooling during terminal Launch Countdown. Implementations to reduce cooling GSB opcrationslmaintenance costs and increase shuttle reliability during critical operations have been incorporatcd. Future implementations will depend upon the results of an on" @default.
