- W1966365875 abstract "The Eocene of the North Sea basin has been divided into five stratigraphic sequences named the Dornoch, Balder, Frigg, Alba and Grid. The Palaeocene-Eocene boundary lies at the base of the Dornoch sequence whereas the Grid extends into the Lower Oligocene. The sequences display consistent and predictable patterns on electric log data and are bounded by high gamma log peaks, which mark thin condensed claystone sections. The sequences have been calibrated using a detailed dinocyst zonation that recognizes a succession of 30 biovents. It can be shown that individual sequence boundaries consistently fall within the same dinocyst subzone, giving a high degree of confidence that these boundaries represent time lines. The sequences can be mapped over the whole of the North Sea basin, retaining their internal character from Quadrant 3 in the north to Quadrants 21 and 22 in the south, a distance of 400 km. The high gamma peaks marking the sequence boundaries are interpreted as surfaces of maximum condensation that record the effect of greatly reduced sediment input into the basin. These surfaces are believed to have a variety of origins including eustatic sea-level rise, changes in sediment supply to the basin and changes in rates of tectonic subsidence or uplift." @default.
