- W1966374805 abstract "CAROL WILLIAMS-NICKELSON and MITCHELL J. PRINSTEIN (Eds.) Internships in Psychology: The APAGS Workbook for Writing Successful Applications and Finding the Right Match Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, 2004, 152 pages (ISBN 1-59147-036-6, US $24.95 Softcover) The purpose of this book is to provide up-andcoming psychology interns with the resources needed to help guide them through the internship application process. Given the daunting and meticulous nature of the application process, this is by no means an easy task. As such, a navigation tool, such as this book, could be very useful for graduate students applying for internship. The book is well written and is presented in an encouraging manner to help ease the stressful nature of the application process. The text is written in the second person, which makes the reader feel as though he or she is being advised and not patronized. Throughout the book, the authors provide a lucid description of the application process and give several helpful examples to which many applicants can relate (e.g., typical feelings experienced by applicants, sample material). Although intended for internship applicants, the book may also be helpful for neophyte graduate students, as readers are advised to start the application process as early as possible. For example, the authors encourage internship applicants to keep an accurate record of all the practicum hours they accrue. Thus, students who are just beginning their graduate training and who are currently accumulating practicum hours may find the authors' advice beneficial, thereby widening the book's readership. The authors begin by providing the reader with a general overview of the application process. In the introductory chapter, useful information pertaining to the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) website is provided so that readers can familiarize themselves with what will be expected when applying for internship. In this chapter, the authors also provide useful information about how many sites individuals typically apply to and the success rates of applicants from previous years. Also presented in the early parts of the book are different mindsets that the authors report they typically observe among internship applicants; these mindsets pertain to the import one places on the application process (e.g., from very little to too much). The presentation of these mindsets is useful as it brings to light how important one's view of the internship process is and how it can influence approaches to the application process. The authors also provide an introduction to what is entailed in the Application for Psychology Internships (AAPI). In doing so, they acknowledge that the application itself can be overwhelming; however, they attempt to break down the application form into more manageable pieces that are intended to reduce at least some of the stress that applicants experience. A list of do's and don'ts is also provided to help organize one's approach to the AAPI. Later in the book, an approach regarding how applicants can track the clinical hours they accrue throughout graduate school is described. Although useful, the authors failed to mention the availability of an online resource that provides students with a pre-established template for collecting this information (http://www.appic.org/training/7_4_training_ web_links.html). Regardless, the authors do stress the importance of tracking hours in detail. The section of the book discussing the essay component of the AAPI is very useful. For instance, the authors describe an approach that is conducive to incorporating their career ambitions indirectly in each of the five compulsory essays; as highlighted by the authors, this is often a major concern for many intern applicants. To do this, they take the readers through each essay and provide valuable tips in terms of their composition. Also included are very useful examples of each essay which prove helpful as they illustrate various styles and approaches to the essays. …" @default.
