- W1966391973 abstract "It has been known for many years that it is possible to observe changes of concentration in supersaturated solutions by interferometric techniques. In classical interferometry the cell width had to be very thin because of the very poor coherence of the light used. The use of a laser source allowed the realization of one directional holographic interferometry and the growth of the crystal could take place in bigger volumes because no restriction is imposed on the thickness of the cell as a consequence of the coherence of the laser light and the holographic technique itself. In this case the information that can be obtained is the mean concentration value averaged over the depth of the solution crossed by the wavefront. The phenomenon may be followed in real time. This is a first approach to the problem. However more details are needed: in the literature little information is usually given on the hydrodynamics and on the distribution of the concentration either in the volume of the liquid near the growing crystal or in the convection plumes always present in experiments performed in a gravitational field. In order to achieve this information, multidirectional holographic interferometry has been applied. By a numerical algorithm of reconstruction from projection it is possible to achieve the concentration field in a slice of solution at a predetermined distance from a crystal face." @default.
