Marked diurnal variations in tissue cAMP content and extracellular cAMP release rates were found in the submersed aquatic angiosperm Scirpus subterminalis Torr. Dissolved cAMP concentrations in littoral lakewater exhibited similarly marked diel fluctuations. In contrast, Najas flexilis (Willd.) Rostk. and Schmidt, a co-occurring submersed species, exhibited little diel periodicity in tissue cAMP or cAMP release rates. The ratio of cAMP release to the generalized release of excreted organic carbon varied greatly on a diel cycle in Scirpus. Tissue cAMP dynamics in Scirpus and lakewater dissolved cAMP concentrations were exponentially correlated with rates of in situ inorganic carbon assimilation in Scirpus." @default.
