- W1966522055 abstract "As announced at a gala dinner at London's Science Museum on 12 June, Robert Kunzig's Mapping the Deep? The Extraordinary Story of Ocean Science has been awarded the prestigious Aventis prize for Science books. Dubbed science's Booker Prize, the £10 000 award, which was established in 1990 by Rhône-Poulenc, the London Science Museum and COPUS (committee on the public understanding of science), aims to encourage the writing, publication and sale of the most successful popular science books. Kunzig's report on the science of the sea was selected from among 94 topics vying for pride of place, including Grand's Creation, Wolpert's Anatomy of Depression, Ridley's Mendel's Demon, Strathern's Mendeleyev's Dream and Johnson's Strange Beauty. Maggie Gee, a former Booker Prize judge, said of this year's shortlist, 'There are more ideas in these books than I find in contemporary fiction’. Sir David Weatherall of Oxford University, UK, chairman of the judges, explained how the winning book had to be ‘almost like a good novel – you want to keep turning the page. It's got to get the science over for a general reader without sacrificing accuracy’. Mapping the Deep must have met these criteria, drawing readers into a compelling narrative of oceanographers, scientists, pioneers, maverick thinkers, deep water divers and submersible pilots delivering, as Weatherall remarked, ‘…a whole new world in a passionate, revelatory and scientifically rigorous way. It makes the mysteries of the deep sea really exciting.’ Robert Kunzig is the European Editor of Discover magazine.
