- W1966587997 abstract "Abstract Phenomenological sociology and South African society. In this article phenomenological sociology is contrasted with (a) the relativization of true knowledge as propounded by sociologists of knowledge, (b) value commitment in sociological research and first-order sociologies, and (c) positivistic techniques. Husserl emphasizes the necessity of returning to the original state of consciousness where knowledge is self-evident. In order to attain this type of situation, phenomenological reduction techniques must be employed. These techniques amount to a suspension of all ir-relevancies, including the preconceptions of the researcher. It is essential that Verstehen augment positivistic techniques and in turn be augmented by phenomenological reduction techniques. This is supported by phenomenological philosophical anthropology. It is debatable whether phenomenological sociology can solve the problems of South Africa. The South African sociologist who experiments with phenomenological sociology, however, will at least be able to learn scientific self-discipline. S. Afr. J. Sociol. 1984, 15(1): 56–59" @default.
