- W1966643232 abstract "In the early days of X-ray work, what an easy task it was to select the plant for one's own use! Only the coil apparatus was available, and provided the unit were purchased from a reliable firm and sufficient money spent upon the equipment, good results could be looked for with confidence, and that was all that was necessary. But when one wished to compare notes with a fellow toiler, difficulties arose. The speed of his interrupter was greater than one's own, his primary input current was less, and yet for some unknown reason his pictures differed. Investigations showed the advantages and disadvantages of speeding up the interrupter, winding the primary to take heavy or light loads; but, looking back on these comparisons, one cannot find definite rules in design and, more important still, in the means adopted for comparative work. Neglecting to-day the coil, which is, at the moment, not very popular, and considering the modern conditions, are we any better off for comparing notes with each other? I venture to think that, apart from tube conditions, we are worse off than ever. We still talk to each other about milliampères and kilovolts, but who ever states the type of apparatus that he uses? All we know is that with a certain number of milliampères and kilovolts we should get certain results when a spine, for example, is photographed, but how is it that the pictures, when finished, are different in a subtle way? Dealing with plants in their order of introduction we have:— Star or mechanical rectification." @default.
