- W1966653339 abstract "The finite element—least-squares optimization algorithm is utilized to identify the hydrogeologic field parameters of a multi-layer aquifer system. The technique developed relies on accurate steady state piezometric head data for each aquifer in the multi-layered system. The least-squares iterative approach presented here systematically adjusts the local transmissivity values and the resistance parameters of the confining layers until a good fit is achieved between the observed and computed piezometric head values at several locations. This is an iterative approach which automates the trial and error model calibration process and extends it to a multi-layer system. The technique is applied to a field problem with considerable success. The algorithm shows promise as a practical tool and a definite alternative to the manual trial and error model calibration approach." @default.
