- W1966756672 abstract "Abstract This paper examines urban land development in Guangzhou in different periods of time between 1960 and 1997 using aerial photos and Landsat Thematic Mapper images. Results indicate that urban land development has been spatially and temporally uneven. Urban growth was sluggish and constrained in the period from the 1950s to 1970s. However, it has shown an accelerated rate after the 1980s, and eastward expansion replaced the traditional southern and western expansions. In recent years, northeastward expansion has increasingly become a favorite direction due to the need for more land and serious west-east-running traffic congestion. The patterns of urban land development can be better understood when relating them to the changing urban planning policies and the spatial structures of the city. The spatial structure has evolved over time in response to various State-approved Master Plans. However, decentralized development has always been a core planning policy. Both the 1985 and 1996 Master Plans called for controlling further growth of the inner city, and promoting the construction of interdependent clusters separated by green belts but linked by highways, railroads/subways, and waterways. It is believed that spatial structures based on these Master Plans maximize the use of the city's natural, economic, and cultural resources. The urban and built-up land has been expanded through development of concentric zones, leapfrog clusters, low-density sprawl, sectors, and belt-shaped clusters." @default.
