- W1966796597 abstract "Ion-pair adsorption chromatography was used to purify clavulniv acid (CA) by employing commercial hydrophobic matrixes in combination with quaternary ammonium salts (QAS). To understand the mechanism governing the interactions between CA, QAS and the matrix, batch experiments were done where the equilibrium relationships for the combinations CA-matrix, QAS-matrix and CA-QAS-matrix were individually investigated. It was shown that the presence of CA can cause a significant concentration-dependent shift in the loading of QAS on the matrix. At high CA concentrations, the total capacity of the system is higher than that expected from a mechanism based purely on ion-pair interactions. These phenomena were analysed qualitatively and semi-quantitatively from the viewpoint of the electrostatic theory and of chemical equilibrium relations between the different species involved in the system. It could be shown that, at the normal conditions used in preparative chromatography, the interactions between CA and the matrix and between CA and QAS in the liquid phase cannot be neglected and have an important contribution to the capacity and affinity of the stationary phase for the adsorbate." @default.
