- W1966803607 abstract "It is shown that for the family of activity versus pH curves, parameter a [1], of an enzyme based upon the Michaelis-Davidsohn model, the relative change of activity for a given change of pH is effectively independent of the value of a outside the inflections of the curve but, between the inflections, is strongly dependent on the value of this parameter. It follows that for enzyme processes occurring in cell membranes of low dielectric constant e(≃8), only those that take place in the membrane pH range lying between the inflections of the activity curve will in general be radically affected under the e transformation from the aqueous value e0≃80 to e≃8, which takes a0≪2 into a≃2. The article demonstrates, however, that such an e transformation is vitally necessary to the enzyme model of the nerve [5,6] not because the dependence of enzyme activity on pH is strongest for a=2, as shown in [1], but because in the enzyme model of the nerve two enzymes, the acetylcholine-receptor and acetylcholine-esterase, must collaborate under common pH changes." @default.
