Die Zahl der Rastertunnelmikroskopie‐Veröffentlichungen nimmt stetig zu, auch wenn diese Technik vielleicht in ihren Anfängen in den achtziger Jahren mit Versprechen wie DNA‐Sequenzierung und maßgeschneiderten bimolekularen (wörtlich: zwei Moleküle) chemischen Reaktionen überschätzt wurde. Diese Publikationen schwanken zwischen Versuchen, den Prozeß, durch den Bilder von Isolatoren erhalten werden, zu erklären, und einfachen Präsentationen der fertigen Bilder als verblüffende Ansichten von Atomen und Molekülen. Während die Abbildungsmechanismen immer noch kontrovers diskutiert werden, steht die Fähigkeit der eingesetzten Instrumente, einzelne Moleküle „zu sehen”︁, inzwischen fest, auch wenn unsere Erwartungen nur zu einem geringen Teil erfüllt wurden. Ein Beispiel: Zur Zeit kann man mit Rastertunnelmikroskopie‐Untersuchungen zwar noch nicht erklären, warum die Adsorption von CO die Dichte von Platinatomen an der Oberfläche eines Einkristalls dieses Metall verdoppelt, aber die Bilder zeigen sehr deutlich, daß dies tatsächlich ein realer Vorgang ist. Wie immer bei der Einführung neuer Analyseninstrumente haben auch diese abtastenden, sehr stark ortsauflösenden mikroskopischen Methoden mit anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten wie nicht reproduzierbaren Ergebnissen und irrtümlich zu Markte getragenen Artefakten zu kämpfen. Dies soll uns jedoch nicht daran hindern, in diesem Übersichtsartikel insbesondere für den Nichtspezialisten eine Reihe sorgfältig durchgeführter und verläßlicher Studien zu präsentieren, um damit zu dokumentieren, wie die Rastertunnelmikroskopie und die verwandte Kraftmikroskopie Einzug in die Chemie gehalten haben, und um eine gesunde Mischung aus Idealismus und Skeptik im Hinblick auf zukünftige Arbeiten zu fördern." @default.
