- W1966893017 abstract "Abstract The influence of a high electric field on the photon stimulated desorption of hydrogen and deuterium from rhodium and nickel surfaces has been studied. Besides H+ and D+, H2+ and D2+ are also detected. These molecular ions are observed only in the presence of a field above 15 V/nm, indicating that the precursor of the desorbing ion is molecular hydrogen in a field-adsorbed state. This is further corroborated by the fact that no isotope exchange is found in the photo-desorbed species. The photodesorption yield spectra show structures at energies characteristic for core levels of the metal. This suggests that the initial excitation is located in the substrate. Arguments for a desorption mechanism via ionization of the adsorbate by Auger electrons from the metal are presented." @default.
