- W1966943984 abstract "In the 1920s and 1930s, Harlem was the setting of a series of health campaigns that demonstrate the “hold” to which Louis Dublin was making reference. Physicians, nurses, and social workers mounted an active health education campaign in response to epidemic levels of tuberculosis in Harlem. Initially targeting one disease, vigorous efforts in the area of TB were part of the broader context of black protest and activism in the arena of health care in the early twentieth century. Activists in Harlem worked successfully to increase opportunities for training and professional advancement for black doctors and nurses. During the Great Depression, Harlem was the site of a bitter conflict between physicians about whether to accept philanthropy in order to establish a black-controlled hospital. Both the accomplishments of health activists and the conflicts among physicians in Harlem are important because they reveal the complexity of larger debates about segregation, economic underdevelopment, and health care that were taking place among African Americans during this period." @default.
