- W1967049917 abstract "1. Goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) were acclimated to temperatures of 5, 15, 25 and 30°C, and the amounts and fatty acid compositions of their brain phospholipids were determined. 2. Choline glycerophosphatides (PC) and ethanolamine glycerophosphatides (PE) were found to be the major phospholipids of goldfish brain, the former occurring in the greatest amount. Environmental temperature had no significant effect on the amounts of these lipids or the total amount of phospholipid present. 3. There was a tendency towards greater unsaturation of the fatty acids of both PC and PE at lower acclimation temperatures. 4. In both PC and PE the greater unsaturation was mediated in the C 16 fatty acids by an increase in the amount of palmitoleic acid, and in C 18 fatty acids by a decrease in stearic acid. 5. The changes were found to be peculiar to particular lipids. Thus the PE C 18 fatty acids changed significantly more than the PC C 18 acids. 6. No significant change in the polyunsaturated (C 20:4 and C 22:6) fatty acids of either phospholipid was found. 7. It is suggested that modification of the phospholipid species in acclimation assists in the maintenance of a specific membrane “fluidity” and membrane permeability properties necessary for the efficient functioning of the nervous system." @default.
