- W1967068549 abstract "The ventilatory response to hypercapnia was measured in anaesthetized rabbits and cats' before and after section of the phrenic nerves. The animals were given O2 mixtures containing 0%' 3% and 7% CO2; PaCO2 was measured in the arterial blood. The /.Ve-PaCO2 relationship in the intact animals was a nearly linear function. After severance of the two phrenic nerves, /.Ve decreased markedly and PaCO2 correspondingly increased. In rabbits there was no increase in /.Ve when the hypercapnic mixtures were given; in cats there was still a positive response to hypercapnia. In the rabbits which had the paralysis of the diaphragm induced 1–2 months previously the respiratory impairment was reduced : there was again a positive response to hypercapnia which indicates the appearance of compensatory phenomena. The cross sectional area of external intercostal muscle fibers of these rabbits was measured, as an index of muscle hypertrophy, and found net to be significantly different from the controls. Also the number of blood capillaries around each muscle fiber was not found to be different in the chronically phrenicotomized rabbits. The mean number of mitochondria in the muscle fiber was 2.3 times greater and their volume fraction was 3.7 times greater in these animals than in the controls. These ultrastructural changes, which might precede the onset of a true hypertrophy, would indicate an increase in the metabolic activity of the muscle fibers and might constitute, at least in part, a possible explanation for the delayed compensatory phenomena taking place in the respiratory system of these animals." @default.
