• W1967069143 abstract "Abstract The utilization of the sulfur of S -methylcysteine by the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida utilis for the synthesis of protein-cystine and -methionine has been studied. Under these conditions, transfer of the intact thiomethyl group of S -methylcysteine, which probably takes place via the intermediate formation of methanethiol, is calculated to account for the synthesis of 21% of the protein-methionine in S. cereuisiae and 35% in C. utilis . The metabolites of S -methylcysteine formed by the two yeasts have been examined. Growing cultures released methylmercaptopyruvic acid, methylmercaptolactic acid and S -methylcysteamine into the medium. Cell suspensions of both yeasts accumulated S -methylcysteine from the medium at a rapid rate. S. cerevisiae subsequently released appreciable amounts of methylmercaptolactic acid, corresponding to 37% of the amino acid taken up. C. utilis suspensions released small quantities of methylmercaptolactic acid, but the major sulfur compound released by this yeast was S -methylcysteamine, which accounted for 51% of the amino acid accumulated. Following the uptake of labelled S -methylcysteine by the yeasts, a number of sulfur compounds in addition to the amino acid were identified in the cell-sulfur pools. Methylmercaptopyruvic acid, methylmercaptolactic acid and glutathione were present in S. cerevisiae , but the major constituent which persisted after the decline and disappearance of S -methylcysteine itself was S -methylglutathione. The same four metabolites were also present in C. utilis , together with S -methylcysteamine, which was the major sulfur constituent in this yeast." @default.
