- W1967098501 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and strength. Currently it is unknown if body composition and muscular power are related to positive bone indices. PURPOSE: This cross-sectional analysis evaluated the relationship of bone strength and quantity to body composition, muscular strength and power in young women. METHODS: 42 women, mean age 24.3 + 5.7 yrs, were tested for leg strength and power using an isokinetic dynamometer (IKD) at 60, 180, and 240 degrees/second (d/s), a countermovement long jump (LJ), and a vertical jump (VJ). Fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) were estimated by air displacement plethysmography (Bod Pod). Mean left and right foot Os Calcis Stiffness Index (OCSI), an index of bone strength, was measured using ultrasound (GE Lunar, Achilles Insight) and bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC), indices of bone quantity, were assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA, GE Lunar). Data were assessed for relationship using Pearson Correlations. RESULTS: Strong relationships were determined for mean OCSI values, BMD, BMC with isokinetic strength at right 60 d/s, r = 0.477, r = 0.417, r = 0.305, p < 0.05 and left 60 d/s, r = 0.530, r = 0.46, r = 0.356, p<0.03 respectively. Fat free mass (FFM) was significantly correlated to all IKD strength values (range r = 0.306-0.385, p<0.05). Significant associations were shown between FFM and bone indices (range r = 0.417-0.781, p<0.01). CONCLUSION: In this population of young women, leg strength and FFM were strongly correlated to bone strength and quantity. Thus, increasing fat free mass and leg strength may enhance bone strength and mass and play a role in the prevention of osteoporosis in young women." @default.
