- W1967171410 abstract "Tuberculosis is a historically important disease—perhaps the most important in terms of numbers prematurely dead, disfigured, and crippled by it over the generations. And, as recent increases in death rates worldwide and the emergence of drug-resistant strains suggest, it is by no means finished yet. Histories of tuberculosis fall into two categories, those written by historians, and those written by medical men. The historians are interested in issues that ought to interest practitioners, such as why death rates from the disease rose and fell in the past, how the disease affected the social relations of the patient, and how it was managed in the pre-antibiotic era. Medical men, by contrast, have been interested in two particular features of the tuberculosis story—how it was “conquered”, and how it affected gifted creative individuals, with loving attention to the deaths of John Keats, Frederic Chopin, Robert Louis Stevenson, and so on. Dormandy's White Death falls essentially into the latter category, and in this respect is deeply unoriginal, although it has to be said that as a catalogue of “artistic” tuberculosis deaths, it is probably the most comprehensive available to date." @default.
