- W1967214468 abstract "Attention is drawn to an incidental advantage of fitting hearing aids binaurally, namely, that, in some cases, this will provide more effective hearing over a wider frequency range than could be obtained by wearing only one hearing aid in either one ear or the other. This occurs because the degree of assistance which can be derived from amplification tends to vary inversely with the severity of hearing loss and there are some persons who hear parts of the speech frequency range better in one ear and other parts better in the other ear. Most typically this benefit is found in cases where the audiometric configuration is ‘cross’ shaped, but some exceptions to this are discussed. An examination of the aided and unaided audiometric thresholds of two hundred deaf children indicated that this benefit, designated the ‘cross-over’ effect, occurs in a substantial proportion of cases and, in some, it would be a major advantage of binaural fitting." @default.
